Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

March is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness about prostate cancer, a common type of cancer in men, and to encourage men to participate in screenings.

 What is prostate cancer?

The prostate gland, a little organ found in the male reproductive system, is where prostate cancer typically originates. Additionally, the prostate gland is responsible for producing a fluid that is a component of semen.

Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the prostate gland grow and multiply uncontrollably, developing a tumour. Over time, these cancerous cells can spread to other parts of the body, including nearby lymph nodes, bones, and other organs.

What are the symptoms of prostate cancer?

Symptoms of prostate cancer can include the following:

  • Difficulty urinating

  • Pain or burning during urination

  • Blood in the urine or semen

  • Pain or discomfort in the pelvic area, lower back, hips or upper thighs

  • Erectile dysfunction

Why should I get screened for prostate cancer?

According to Prostate Cancer UK, "Every 45 minutes one man dies from prostate cancer – that's more than 12,000 men every year" (https://prostatecanceruk.org/prostate-information/about-prostate-cancer). This is why it’s important to get screened for prostate cancer, because early detection can help prevent the spread of the cancer and improve the chances of successful treatment.

What do I do if I have prostate cancer?

If you think you are experiencing symptoms of prostate cancer, you should see your doctor as soon as possible.

Moreover, if you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, you will be given a treatment plan and options by medical professionals. Treatment options may include surgery, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination of these approaches.

Furthermore, it’s key to make healthy changes to your life while you’re receiving medical treatment. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management techniques, is crucial.

You can also join support groups and seek counselling to help manage the emotional and psychological impact of the cancer diagnosis.
