Stress Awareness Month

As it’s Stress Awareness Month, it’s an important reminder for us to learn more about stress and take care of our mental health. The effects of stress are different for each individual, but they can be profound and have an impact on every aspect of our lives.

At  Harley 104 Clinic, we think that treating symptoms is just as important as empowering people to handle stress with  resilience.

What is stress?

Stress is a natural physiological and psychological response to challenges and difficulties. It’s the body’s method of mobilising resources to cope with situations that require adaption or change. The body releases stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline in response to perceived or actual stressors (things that cause stress), starting a series of physiological events known as the the “flight -or-fight” response.

The aim of the response is to prepare the body to either confront the threat (fight) or flee from it (flight). Physiologically, this can include increased heart rate, heightened alertness, high blood pressure, and strained muscles, among other changes. These changes are intended to help individuals respond effectively to the perceived threat.

The symptoms of stress:

Stress comes in different forms. Here are some common symptoms of stress:

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Muscle tension or stiffness

  • Fatigue/low energy

  • Insomnia or difficulty sleeping

  • Rapid heartbeats

  • Sweating

  • Digestive problems like diarrhoea, stomach pain and nausea

  • Anxiety or depression

  • Inability to focus

  • Overthinking

How can I manage stress?

  • Identify Stressors: Recognise the specific sources of stress. This may include work deadlines, relationship conflicts, financial worries, or health concerns. Finding solutions starts with identifying stressors.

  • Be Active: Exercising or engaging in any physical activity helps to improve your mood and takes your mind off stressors. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters.

  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Maintain proper hydration, eat a balanced diet, and make getting adequate sleep each night a priority. Steer clear of excessive alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine intake, as these chemicals might make stress worse.

  • Seek Social Support: Reach out to your friends and family or local support groups  for emotional support and encouragement.

  • Engage in Hobbies & Activities: Find something you enjoy doing and use it to divert your stress. This can also bring relaxation and escapism to your life.

  • Seek Professional Help: You can also reach out to a health professional who can provide valuable tools and strategies for coping with stress and improving overall well-being.
