Movember Movement
Movember is an annual campaign that takes place in the month of November and raises awareness/funds for men’s physical and mental health. Part of the movement entails men growing out their moustaches in support of the campaign.
The movement is a globally recognised campaign that encourages men to speak up about their health and to take action. Additionally, it focuses on combating the negative stigma that men shouldn’t be open about their mental health and physical health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer and suicide.
Who can take part in the movement?
Anyone can take part in the Movember campaign. Men can challenge themselves to grow out their moustaches, and physical activity is encouraged for everyone to take part in, including women.
When was Movember founded?
Movember was founded by two Australian friends in 2003. They jokingly brought up the topic of bringing back the moustache by encouraging friends to grow one. They found inspiration to fundraise for a men’s health campaign from a friend’s mother, who was fundraising for breast cancer. However, instead, they would use a moustache as their pink ribbon.
What is the significance of Movember?
Movember is seen as a very profound campaign as it sheds light on men’s health issues that aren’t openly talked about amongst men. Therefore, the movement encourages men to take care of their health by opening up to others and taking action.
