What You Need to Know About Prediabetes

Prediabetes is a condition in which your blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be classified as diabetes. It’s a warning sign that you’re at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, and it’s important to take steps to prevent it from progressing.

Here’s what you need to know about prediabetes.

What are the symptoms of prediabetes?

Most people with prediabetes don’t have any symptoms. However, some people may experience increased thirst, frequent urination, fatigue, and blurred vision.

What causes prediabetes?

Prediabetes is caused by a combination of factors, which can include:

  • Genetics or having a family history of diabetes

  • Inactive lifestyle

  • Being overweight or obese

  • Having high blood pressure

  • Sleeping at irregular times

How is prediabetes diagnosed?

Prediabetes is typically diagnosed through a blood test called the A1C test. This test measures your average blood sugar level over the past two to three months. You have prediabetes if the results of your A1C test fall between 5.7 and 6.4 percent.

What are the risks of prediabetes?

If left untreated, prediabetes can lead to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other serious health problems.

Moreover, if you have prediabetes, it’s important to take steps to prevent it from progressing to type 2 diabetes. Talk to your doctor about lifestyle changes you can make to reduce the risk.
